More fallout from Monday’s topic of energy lost in food waste. In her Discover blog, Sheril Kirshenbaum asks ‘how do we change attitudes and behavior on waste?’ Well, I hope it starts with a book.

A late addition to the steam table: New York’s Dept. of Ag says it’s okay to change the sell-by date on food. The rule itself isn’t terrible, considering the sell-by date is aimed at stores. But it seems like a bad idea in that it could lead to abuse.

A year into San Francisco’s mandatory composting, there [...]
Vancouver implemented curbside food scrap composting yesterday, er…Earth Day. It’s limited to single family houses now and is only accepting some organic materials this year.
The city site has some nice promo posters, a video showing how composting is part of cooking and a 35% of home waste is food stat that seems a bit high. But the real question is: [...]

Dear Wasted Food reader,
Tomorrow is Earth Day. You may have heard. You know, it’s a time to be inundated with offers to buy green products contemplate our planet’s fragility.
To mark the occasion, I have one simple request: Don’t waste any food.
That’s not too much to ask–for one day, at least–is it?
Thanks and enjoy the day.
Your pal,
Jonathan
Hard to believe that it’s baseball season already. But it is. And with April 22 fast approaching, that means many teams have publicized their plans for Earth Day.
Is it just me, or do all the Earth-Day-only plans magnify how teams (or businesses or ourselves) don’t do much every day? There’s lip service paid to being [...]
Yesterday’s EPA-led food waste roundtable was nothing if not energizing. The whole idea was to get all food waste stakeholders into one room. Given that there were about 125 attendees, including retailers, food service reps, municipal solid waste, composters, consultants, researchers, anaerobic digestion vendors, EPA representatives and at least one blogger, it had to be a [...]
One rule at this humble site is that any time a food service provider with 400+ venues launches a food waste reduction campaign, they’ll receive some favorable coverage. (Between you and me, I’ll pretty much write about any kind of food waste initiative.)
And so…Bon Appetit Management Company (BAMCO) recently announced its food waste reduction plan. [...]
A few of you kind souls have sent this City Harvest PSA to me, all with the caveat that ‘no apples were wasted in the making of this ad.’
I was pretty skeptical. I mean, how’d they do it? By installing nets on the opposite subway track? By considering feeding rats not wasting?
Oh, right–CGI. [...]

I write plenty about keeping food out of landfills to prevent greenhouse gas emissions. So it was high time I visited a landfill specifically to see what a few methane handling systems look like.
Friday, I went to Orange (County, N.C.) Regional Landfill where my trash used to go, before I moved to the next town. My current [...]
Mandatory composting is officially a go in San Francisco (and should start this fall), as Mayor Gavin Newsom signed the bill into law. You can read the text of his speech or watch it:
