School Lunch: All or Nothing

I can hear the food waste alarm bells from a few states away, as a student blogger from an Alabama high school reports that his cafeteria won’t sell items a la carte. Seriously?photo by cafenut (via flickr)

At lunch, you cannot buy any item of food separately, because it’s against Jefferson County regulations. You must buy a whole lunch, even if you just want a milk. This leads to a whole lot of wasted food.

In my day, we had green lunch tickets and yellow milk tickets. That way, the people who brought lunch, could buy milk. Not so at Jefferson County International Baccalaureate School (JCIB), near Birmingham, Ala.

JCIB may be ranked as fourth-best school in the country by Newsweek, but they just lost a ton of ground in the WastedFood.com rankings.
