Rotten Idea

La Tomatina takes place a week from today in Buñol, Spain. You know, it’s that big tomato fight in Spain.

tomatina-2.jpgFar be it from me to comment on a traditional cultural event. I’m pretty sure that this is a giant waste of food. There just has to be a better use for tomatoes. Besides, it only dates back to 1944 and nobody’s sure why it started. That said, it does look fun.

While I can’t get too worked up about La Tomatina, that’s partly due to its uniqueness. But I am not cool with an Arizona restaurant recreating this event. In fact, I think it’s so lame that I’m not even going to mention the name of the organizing eatery. Take that, unnamed lame restaurant!

To be fair, the anonymous restaurant is hosting a tapas event later that night where attendees bring non-perishable food items. Sure sounds like a sign of a guilty conscience to me.

But seriously, am I missing something here? I’d be happy to reconsider my stance if someone can articulate the cultural significance of tomato tossing. Until then, I’m just going to amuse myself with the English translations on the official La Tomatina page.
