CBS’ The Early Show weighed in with some household tips for avoiding food waste. Awesome to see the networks (finally) finding the issue of food waste.

I can’t really say anything about this Grist article (for reasons that will become clear), but you should read it! In case you’re confused, click one of the links in the piece…

Good on Morrison’s for introducing changes to reduce waste in shoppers’ homes. But file this finding under ‘duh:’

Other research commissioned by Morrisons found 44 per cent of shoppers believed prolonging the life of fresh produce would help them waste less.

Buried deep in this piece on Calif. school food waste: the estimate that $2 billion of tax dollars are squandered from children’s plate waste (under the National School Lunch Program).

Hello, I find it absolutely ridiculous that there is about two billion dollars a year spent on wasted food. I would think that this would be a bigger issue, especially with the current state of the economy. At the same time, I think it is good that the issue is receiving publicity, though I doubt that will change anything.

  2. Hey Brett.
It is ridiculous, eh? Especially when schools make students take all the lunch items, even if they don’t plan to eat them.

I think school lunch will become a larger issue, as there’s a bill now working its way through congress that should hopefully expand funding for school lunch (although not by enough).

One reason there isn’t as big of an outcry, though, is that there’s always going to be a good amount of plate waste with kids. We’d never eliminate that $2 bil, but we could make a sizable dent in it. Especially if we forbid schools from using the ‘take it all’ lunch approach.

  3. Hi Jonathan,
I thought you might enjoy this NPR clip

The college student interviewed is a dear friend’s daughter. I’ve eaten at the restaurant mentioned in the clip…didn’t much like it, but it’s an interesting concept.
    take care,
