Word out of England is that some pols want to ban “buy one, get one free” deals. The Liberal-Democrats’ rationale is that stores are luring people to buy more food than they need, causing unnecessary waste. Now THAT sounds like too much government for my taste.

Here’s an update on Seattle’s curbside composting program that’s coming at the end of the month. Giddy up!

The good news here is that there’s less waste at some supermarkets. Unfortunately that’s also the bad news, as it means supermarket donations have tailed off. The really bad news: food pantry demand is up (from 20 to 57 percent in the article).

60 folks picked 5,000 pounds of oranges at “The Big Pick” tree gleaning event in Chatsworth, Calif. Almost as exciting: organizers provided donuts, coffee and, yes, fresh-squeezed orange juice.

Finally, the Tweet of the Week goes to @PortlyMan:

I wish someone would finally produce the “Snackin’” (the edible napkin! All that wasted food on paper and no way to eat it. What a shame!

  1. Love the ideas! As for the “snackin’ napkin,” here’s my take on napkins. In all seasons except winter, our paper napkins get composted. Last fall I decided I’d had enough of the waste and switched to cloth. We haven’t bought paper napkins since. It doesn’t save the food tidbits on the napkins, but really, how much waste is it? Keeping the focus on minimizing the wasted paper is much more effective.
Upon further review, I wish we’d switched to cloth napkins earlier. It’s so, so easy to toss the dirty ones in the laundry. What took me so long?

  2. Yeah, cloth napkins are easy, plus they feel so much fancier! I think that tweeter had his tongue firmly planted in his cheek, BTW. At least, I hope so!

  3. I don’t know, seems like a good idea to me. Not exactly new–injera and rice-paper wraps both serve, arguably, some of the same purpose as napkins. Though they’re less funny. -G-

Shame I didn’t see this idea a few months back–I’d be spending this week selling repackaged tortillas to the tourists! “SXSW Snackins.” In lime-and-chile flavor to go with tequila, naturally.

  4. Hmm…maybe the idea does have legs. I think injera would work better because it’s more sponge-like. But I do see the nice Texas tie-in of tortillas. I’d want a “snackin” more for messy things like barbecue and chili, though. Talk to Stubbs?
