Keepin’ it Real…Ugly

It can get a little ugly when I go to the farmer’s market. Just this ugly:

These are actual (greenhouse-grown) peppers bought at The Durham Farmer’s Market this past weekend. No photoshopping, I promise.

Despite their shar-pei appearance,  they were delicious. Proving once again that food doesn’t have to look perfect or homogeneous to taste great.

And now–these beauts are ready for their closeups:

    I’ve come to realize that insisting on perfection leads to more food waste. Not only do I buy ugly produce, I also complain less when one of a packet is not in the best of shape. My rules of thumb for acceptability are 2 raspberries or blackberries per pint, 2 strawberries per lb, 1 clementine per box.

    I sometimes purposely pick the ugly ones, if there are any, at the grocery store, just to support the idea of putting out less than perfect produce.
