Friday Buffet

The NYT had this great piece on root-to-stem eating on Wednesday (sort of the veggie/summer garden version of snout-to-tail).

Now I’ll eat most things, but carrot tops? There are uses, but no runaway successes.

Not to be outdone, the WSJ’s Juggle blog ran this helpful post on making the most of your CSA subscription.

Restaurant customers have spoken–we want smaller portions. An NPD Group survey found that 57 percent of diners want to eat smaller portions in the coming year.

Uh oh–looks like we may have a new global food waste “champion.” China tosses more trash per person than the U.S., and a larger portion of it (25% to 14%) is food.

And just a head’s up: Monday on this very blog (and Sunday on the Wasted Food Facebook page) I’ll unveil the new paperback cover! It comes out in exactly one month!

I’m getting a 404 error on the restaurant portions link.

However, I sure don’t want smaller portions. Make them bigger, then maybe I can get 3-4 meals out of one instead of just 2-3.

    Hey Jenny,
    I fixed the portions link…
What if you could get a smaller portion for less money?? I can tell you won’t be wasting any food from restaurants, but many folks are put in a tough spot by the massiveness of portions. From where I stand, the more choice the better!

Yes, It would actually be nice to be able to choose the size of the meal. I occasionally see half sized portions on menus (usually pasta), but they are usually terrible price wise, say 10 for the full size and 8 for the half, or 15 and 12. For that small of price difference, I’ll get the full and have a meal of leftovers. Although I suppose if I’m looking to get the best value for my dollar I should cook my own food anyways 😉

A menu with several different options, priced accordingly, would be great though. It would reduce waste from people that are traveling or just don’t like leftovers. Fast food does it pretty well, for the most part. Maybe restaurants don’t want to seem like them, asking would you like small, med, or large each time.

I eat out so infrequently, that I would be sad to see smaller portions. Restaurant leftovers are better than gold!
