Happy Recycling

Happy America Recycles Day!

On this blog, that means a celebration of composting, which recycles food’s nutrients by depositing them back into the soil.

But the mainstream view of recycling doesn’t seem to include composting. What’s your take? Is composting recycling? Should it be considered in that family or is it a different beast?

Whatever your opinion, maybe it’s time we encourage that association. I’m guessing it would really speed the adoption of composting.

I’m celebrating America Recycles Day in Atlanta, where I’m giving a talk at the CDC in the afternoon and another one at Emory at 7:30 (open to the public). If you’re in that neck of the woods, come share your opinion on composting/recycling in person!

    Yes, composting is definitely recycling!

When we compost, we are mimicking the composting that occurs in nature, which happens in a slower way. Composting is how nature recycles!

I heard from an inside source that the Culinary Institute of America tosses tons of food every week. I suppose they can’t give it to food organizations because of liability. Wonder where it goes.

I am a Grandmother and was brought up in a family that never wasted food. In my house i have a mantra that nothing organic leaves the property–I compost most things, have a vegt. garden and I wonder why composting is not made to be compulsory as in some parts of England.
Leftovers are used or frozen and NOTHING is wasted–I try to avoid buying plastic as it complicates the cycle.

Mari, I tend to agree with you that composting is nature’s way of recycling. Of course, it’s aided by people a bit (turning the pile, etc)

Michael–interesting…Maybe you could put me in touch with your “inside source.” They should be able to give stuff away b/c of the good samaritan act.

Good for you, Elizabeth. That’s a nice model to emulate.
