Friday Buffet

Here’s a fascinating preview of an article on home food waste that’s due out in the spring (sort of like the movie trailer of the magazine world!). Based on the online piece, I can’t wait to read the real thing.

A comment on the above page led me to discover my new favorite Danish phrase: Stop Spild Af Mad. Very cool.

I just heard from Lovin’ Spoonfuls, a Massachusetts-based food rescue group with a I couldn't resist. Photo by DesertMama via Creative Commonscatchy name. In addition to recovering food for hungry people, they rescue dog food for hungry pups.

A friend (thanks, Erica) told me about a Ziploc ad (played durin g the Olympics) that cite food waste stats a few times. I haven’t seen them, but they’re for this new kind of bag. Anyone else catch this commercial?

I’m a fan of this particular post because 1)it’s informative and 2)There’s a picture of cute puppy on it!!! So moral of the story, if you want more people to pay attention to food waste include more pictures of cute puppies. It’s a gimmicky, manipulative, perhaps even dirty tactic, but all’s fair in internet and puppies. That’s what somebody may have said once. Also, you should check this out. http://puppiesandexplosions.com/

It’s not informative, but it is awesome.

I love this Danish site! The Danes I’ve known are incredibly frugal by nature!

As for the Ziploc bags – haven’t seen the tv ad, since I’ve avoided the Olympics – but while we might not be wasting food, aren’t we wasting oil by using disposable food-saving bags? All we need to avoid food waste at home is education and self-discipline, which don’t cost anything and produce no waste.

I’m skeptical about the slider bags. My experience is that the sliders prevent an airtight seal, so I use them only when the seal isn’t important (such as froz chix bones waiting to be made into stock). I do find many ziploc seals to be a bit of a challenge to get lined up. Maybe this will help.

Made “Mexi-Bowls” for dinner last night, which essentially consisted of layers of savories that matched each of our palates.

It was a perfect way to use up that tiny bit of leftover roasted potatoes and that one small head of broccoli.

And the best part is that they were very tasty and even healthy. My husband commented that he could eat it every night.

On a lesser note, I threw out almost an entire pan of frittata that no one had liked. (Turned out very dry.)

Kim, if you think puppies are manipulative and gimmicky, wait til you see the cute kid in Monday’s post. All that’s left is a pic of the “Hang in There” kitty.

As for your link, those fire-breathing pups remind me of how rank my dog’s breath is. Good times!
