Main post to come, but in the meantime…here’s an article examining supermarkets’ responses to rising food prices. No requests for in-store Wasted Food seminars (yet)…

I had fun writing this piece/interview on How You Eco.

And don’t blink or you’ll miss my quote in this little piece in Parade. In the same issue, happily, you can learn why Kevin Costner finally listened to his heart.

Nice work on the Parade article! My wife and I were having a conversation about buying more from the farmer’s market b/c it is local and slightly more expensive so we’d be less inclined to waste it and she quoted you saying “You know Jon says that one reason we waste so much food is because it’s actually pretty cheap compared to what it used to be.” Or something like that…
Congrats on the quote in Parade. A food waste-related question occurred to me this morning as I was getting ready for work: Does coffee count as food waste?
I’m finding that I often make more than my wife and I use. It seems fairly innocuous, but then again I never really thought much about leftovers and the like until you started writing about it. Just curious.
I’ve tried to focus on foods, not beverages, but I’d say it’s still best to avoid wasted drinks.
Why food matters more: it gets sent to the landfill, where its rotting emits methane, a greenhouse gas. Liquids, on the other hand, go down the drain where it is quickly diluted. But, regularly making too much coffee is a waste of the resources used to harvest, roast and transport it from bush to bean to ‘Bucks (Star, that is).
Anyway, we often have leftover coffee that gets tossed. As does most of the country. A few ideas would be making less, turning the remains into ice coffee, or microwaving it. Also, you can compost the grounds or just put them in a plant’s pot as a kind of fertilizer. I’ve seen coffee shops give out their grounds for these uses.
Iced coffee; now there’s a good idea. I always seem to have leftover coffee in the morning, and that’s a natural fix. Genius!
Sorry for turning your blog into a food waste advice column, but for what it’s worth, it helped.
Oh, and I’m really glad that Kevin Costner found love again.
Hey, that’s what I’m here for…
