No Tray Earth Day

The 109 schools listed below all went trayless on Earth Day (4/22). That means that theyRiding Off Into the Sunset? (photo by bradleygee via Flickr) removed trays from at least one dining hall, cafe, student union or other food service venue to reduce the amount of food waste and energy and water usage.

And these are just the Sodexo-supplied schools (well done!) that went without trays. I’m listing them vertically to illustrate just how many colleges and universities participated (109!). The idea is spreading…

Now, let’s hope many of these schools decide to implement trayless dining in the Fall. To ease student adoption of the idea, the best time to begin is at the beginning of the school year.

the thought of going tray less scared me at first because I am generally an accident waiting to happen… but when you stop and think about it, going trayless not only saves food, water and energy it also prevents over eating and with obesity rates on the rise in the US how can you not embrace the idea? I think the tray less trend will spread to schools and people will embrace it …

love your blog by the way!

HOW do they do this? Plop all the food in the students’ hands (like mashed potatoes, meat, veggies, etc?) What a mess! Or do they use (gasp!) waxed paper to put the food on? Or do they just ladel the food into open mouths in line, like baby birds?

Why not install one BIG kitchen sink for everybody to lean over as they eat? Come’onnnnnn!!!!

I thought trays were REUSABLE (read: washable) instead of the styrofoam that takes a ba-jillion years to decompose?

    What’s next?

They’re called plates. Pretty useful things.

It’s not really trays or Styrofoam. They’re removed the trays and replaced them with…nothing. Asking students to use their legs a bit. Maybe two trips–gasp!

Trays are reusable, but in that reusing, a lot of water is used.

Thanks for reading, I hear you on the Styrofoam.

Contemplate holidays that contain transportation, accommodation and foodstuff when searching for final second offers. Numerous of these bargains are for flights and resorts, cruises or all-inclusive resorts.
