I am excited that Portland will finally be allowing food waste in our yard debris pickups. I only have a once-a-month garbage pickup, so this will greatly help. However, since I compost, it will only be chicken bones.

However, not everyone composts, so this will be fantastic for Portlanders.

Parents probably don't need the calories. And the vet would probably nix crusts as Fido food. But cut-off crusts don't need to wind up in the garbage. You can store them in the freezer until you have enough to use for making stuffing. Or you can break them up into little pieces and use them in meatloaf or stuffed cabbage. Or toast them and grind them up as bread crumbs. There you go Jonathon. There's always a way to use up every last bit!

As for the sandwich cutters, if kids will eat the cute sandwiches instead of throwing them away at school, I am sure they will save more food than they waste. I am also hoping that most parents will eat the crusts themselves or feed them to the dog.
