Jon,
Still Tasty is a sweet resource. I really like how clear and concise their package dates explanation is. They sure beat this lousy container date explication: http://www.culinate.com/articles/culinate8/expiration_dates who the heck wrote that, by the way?
Peace and Love,
Dan

I love Still Tasty!

I had no idea mustard and ketchup could be ok out of the fridge. We never use up a bottle in a month, though, so it's good I keep ours cold.

Bottled water had such a meteoric rise (see Royte's book), that maybe it'll have a similarly swift fall. We'll see.

Bottled water's expiration date is all about taste. Manufacturers think the flavor is a bit off after sitting for a few years, so they give it a use-by date. Kinda lame, huh?

Good info, thanks Jonathan. But I cringed at the bottled water note. Why is anyone still using bottled water in the first place?!!?? (Has Terry from Fake Plastic Fish seen this post?) Most cities and towns have perfectly drinkable tap water. And for those who live where the tap water is not so great, why not use a filter system like Britta and reusable water bottles. The Britta filters are recyclable (though I admit it's not the easiest process) and the cost becomes negligable.

Thanks, this is just what we needed. Still working on eating down our fridge and pantry but summer's bounty keeps creeping in.
