Democratic National Convention organizers aimed to divert 85 percent of its waste from the landfill, including composting food. Based on this Rocky Mountain News article, it seems like they’ll have to settle for 70 percent.
In my book, that’s still quite an accomplishment, as described here. So why bar volunteers from talking to the press, Dems? (see RMN article)

Holy carp! Utah is looking for ideas on how to avoid wasting 6 million pounds of the freshwaster fish.

In terms of composting, Microsoft is getting into the act at their Redmond, Wash., headquarters. Wonder what those cool cats at Apple are doing…

There’s plenty more trayless news as colleges begin to head back to school. The AP had this nice trend story and then there’s this specific news from UConn and the University of Illinois.

Finally, here’s a little light reading…why supercaptalism has sparked the “Throwaway Society.”

I have a friend who has been a volunteer for the Obama campaign for nearly all of 2008, and she mentioned a few weeks ago that one of the cardinal rules is that volunteer staff members do not talk to the press, so I don’t think this is exclusive to the trash effort.
Ahh…that makes more sense. Thanks, tg.
It doesn’t seem like the policy is carried out very well, though. The Denver Post article has plenty of volunteer quotes.
I wonder what kind of food waste is generated in St. Paul MN at the Republican National Convention after they cut back on all the events?
