The area we live in was very densely populated in the 1850s... during the New South Wales gold rush, so there are heaps of abandoned fruit trees. Plums, cherries, apples, figs, pears, apricots.. even citrus.

By the end of summer we hope to have tonnes of preserves :)

Thanks, Nick. You're right, tree gleaning is rewarding for the picker and, hopefully, useful and healthy for those receiving the donations.

I love the idea of a feral fruit map. I'll have to try that sometime. I've only come across some berries and herbs, but when I do find some fruit trees I now know how to map them!

Fantastic stuff Jonathan, there is nothing quite like the joy of filling a basket with fruit that would have gone to waste otherwise.

My wife Kirsten's whole family have been devotees to collecting fruit from feral/abandoned trees since she was a kid. She even wrote an article on our blog about how to make a feral fruit map. http://www.milkwood.net/resources/how-tos/how-to-make-a-feral-fruit-map.html

Good luck with you future fruit gleaning and keep us posted.
