I know a lot of people who would argue against guilt being involved with food in any fashion. But in the realm of wasting, I think a little bit may go a long way.

Of course, not having kids, I'm really out of my league here. If I'm lucky enough to have kids, I hope I can teach them to value food. Just not sure yet how.

I am from the UK, born in 1970. I had to eat everything on my plate - or sit there for hours staring at it. Now I am an adult I automatically clear my plate and feel really guilty about wasting food. But unfortunately my kids are not trained up the same way... and maybe they are a symptom of why food waste is growing.

My kids regularly leave crusts and half-eaten cereal and food on their plates. It is not the done thing anymore to force children to clear their plate. It is condemned as cruel, encouraging obesity or creating food fads and power struggles. So kids are growing up leaving their food and no-one is making them feel GUILTY about it!

I say - bring back a bit of guilt.

[...] In addition to aiding obesity, college cafeterias’ all-you-can-waste-eat plans cause great amounts of food waste. I’ve written on this before and even highlighted one interesting peer pressure solution. [...]
